Our current electricity system is one of the largest sources of air pollution in our Province. Nova Scotia is moving away from coal power by 2030. Renewable onshore wind provides a clean, cost-effective, and abundant alternative. It will generate jobs and other significant benefits for Nova Scotian communities, promote energy independence, and power a strong, green future for our economy.

Clean, affordable energy

Wind energy provides a reliable and affordable source of power for Nova Scotia. Research shows that the levelized cost of generating electricity from wind has steadily declined, down 69% between 2010 and 2022.

It also reduces our reliance on unpredictable and volatile fossil fuel prices, while ratepayers are protected by long-term contracts that limit how much will be paid to contracted companies.

The bottom line? Wind-generated electricity is a local, cleaner, cheaper and more reliable source of energy than fossil fuels. In fact, our onshore wind projects are expected to save Nova Scotia approximately $100 million over the next 25 years, compared to coal and other fossil fuels.

Powering our economy

Onshore wind energy projects approved in 2022 are expected to generate more than $450 million in construction activity and create about 1,700 direct and indirect jobs over their lifetime, mostly in rural Nova Scotia.

When it comes to onshore wind energy, we know many are looking for credible, reliable information. These are some of the questions we’ve covered.

Wind and electricity rates

In Nova Scotia, different factors impact your electricity rate with the generation costs being one of them. Wind energy has some of the lowest generation costs and increasing our supply of renewable energy – like wind – will reduce our reliance on expensive and imported fossil fuels.

Property values

Peer-reviewed research has not demonstrated any widespread, long-term impacts on the value of nearby homes or property. We also know that the construction and maintenance of wind turbines creates jobs – particularly in rural communities.

Community involvement 

Meaningful community involvement is important. Proponents of onshore wind energy projects may host community meetings or open local offices where you can learn more. You can also get involved in the Environmental Assessment process.

Your health and our planet 

There are many common misconceptions when it comes to wind turbines, human health and the environment. Numerous studies show that wind turbine noise has not identified any direct or long-term impacts on our general, physical or mental health, but may result in annoyance (which can be used as a measure of well-being).

There are concerns related to wind turbine noise. However, in Nova Scotia turbine noise can’t exceed 40 decibels. So, the noise from a wind farm is about the same as the noise your fridge makes.

Wind turbines are also regulated to protect our land, water and wildlife. Before any project work can start, a detailed Environmental Assessment is required, to ensure that any potential impacts of the project on the environment are identified and addressed.
